Being a new business owner, I try lots of different things to gain knowledge and grow my business. I’ve taken classes, joined networking groups, read books, subscribed to periodicals, attended conferences, and met with vendors. Each of these activities increases my knowledge to some degree, but BY FAR, the best thing I’ve done for my interior design business has been attending Design Camp last October!
Design Camp was started by Lori Dennis and Kelli Ellis. These women have some amazing careers that include programs on HGTV, celebrity clients, work in national magazines, and most recently a book! Twice a year, Lori and Kelli host Design Camp, which is a conference geared towards individuals in the interior design industry. There are famous speakers, amazing vendors, tons of networking, great giveaways, lectures ranging from social media and branding to the legal stuff every designer should know…and cocktail parties!
Design Camp has had a huge impact on my business! When I attended in October 2013, I had just started my blog. I had no clue about social media and just had a basic blog and website. I sat with some amazing people the first day at Design Camp and all of them were tweeting and posting and Instagramming and using Google+ like crazy to share some of the great things that were going on at camp! I had no idea how to do any of that and felt like a total novice. During the day, speaker after speaker talked about the importance of social media and all of them had twitter profiles, Instagram accounts, Pinterest boards, etcetera, etcetera. I was convinced I needed to be using social media and learned enough through the speakers, networking, and my very patient table mates (what is a hashtag??) to start tweeting and posting by the end of the two day conference!!
Various designers did presentations that covered their work, their process, and how they got started in the business. There were presentations on software, contracts, new trends, and branding.
And did I mention how fun it was?!?! There were hilarious speakers such a Kathryn M. Ireland from Million Dollar Decorator and Phil Palen, a social media and branding expert. There were cocktail parties where we got to see beautiful products and network. I met some wonderful friends I still keep in touch with.

So…..who wants to go to Design Camp in July?!?! This will be the first time Design Camp is held in conjunction with the Las Vegas Market! The first day will be at the Las Vegas Market showrooms, so you can see all the new products and trends before everyone else! The next two days will be the summit filled with amazing speakers like Roger Thomas, who designed the Wynn and Encore hotels in Las Vegas!
I am giving away a FREE ticket to Design Camp valued at $1,297!!! The camp is July 29-31, 2014. You’ll be responsible for your own flight and hotel, but there will be some great hotel rates for “campers”.
